‘VENICE TWINNED WITH NEWHAM’

Monday 28th May – Friday 15th June. 2012.

Venice Twinned with Newham’ is a new project by London based artist Andy Lawson.

Lawson has been taking photographs on everyday journeys in Newham for the past five years. Responding to an invitation to show at the library gave birth to the idea of correlating photos from Newham and a suite of photos amassed on an excursion to the Venice Biennale in 2011.

The LMU library exhibition brings together a snapshot of the series of twenty-five pairs of photographs; images whose selection has been governed by the condition that they match. i.e. their description; noun or verb correspond…

Every project has parameters. For ‘Venice Twinned…’ Lawson set out 3 strict rules that dictated the selection of the series:

1.     All images must have been taken before the concept for the project was initiated (February 2012). i.e. no photographs were taken to create a pair; all pairs existed already, they just needed to be recognised.

2.     Once a match had been identified the image must be used, even if it is not a ‘good’ photograph. i.e. the system overrides any aesthetic value judgements.

3.     Having been selected the image could not be cropped – save cropping it to the dimensions to fit a scale of 5 by 3½ (or vice versa) and must be cut to the maximum size possible within that format.
